Panchajanya पाञ्चजन्य is the Shankha शंख conch of the Hindu हिन्दु god Vishnu विष्णु

Krishna कृष्ण, the avatar अवतार of Vishnu विष्णु, is described possessing a shankhaशंख called Panchajanya पाञ्चजन्य, one of his four attributes together with the mace Kaumodaki कौमोदकी, the disc-like weapon Sudarshana Chakra सुदर्शन चक्र and a lotus flower.

It was used at Kurukshetra कुरुक्षेत्र. The conch was used during the Kurukshetra कुरुक्षेत्र War.

Katha कथा /Story of Panchjanya पाञ्चजन्य

Panchajanya पाञ्चजन्य or Shankhasur शंखसुर was an evil sea demon who lived in a colossal conch shell in the deepest depths of the Prabhasa प्रभास Ocean or was a demon in the form of a conch shell. He kidnapped the son of Sandipani संदीपनी, the guru गुरु of Shri Krishna श्री कृष्ण, Balarama बलराम and Sudama सुदामा, and imprisoned him in the conch shell. Upon completion of their studies, Krishna कृष्ण, Balarama बलराम, and Sudama सुदामा persuaded the teacher to ask for the preceptor’s dakshina दक्षिणा (fees) of his liking. Sandipani संदीपनी asked for, as his dakshina दक्षिणा, the restoration of his child. Krishna कृष्ण became enraged when he heard about the kidnap and plunged into the sea to rescue the son of Sandipani संदीपनी. Krishna कृष्ण successfully slew Shankhasur शंखसुर and took the conch shell for himself. He then named the conch shell after the Demon.

Another legend suggests that the Panchajanya पाञ्चजन्य was one of the items that appeared during the churning of ocean or the Samdura Manthan समुन्द्र मंथन

शंख क्यों बजाया जाता है ?

शंख बजाने से ॐ की मूल ध्वनि का उच्चारण होता है । भगवान ने सृष्टि के निर्माण के बाद सबसे पहले ॐ शब्द का ब्रहानाद किया था । भगवान श्री कृष्ण के भी महाभारत में पाञ्चजन्य शंख बजाया था । इसलिए शंख को अच्छाई पर बुरे की विजय का प्रतीक भी माना जाता है । ये मानव जीवन के चार पुरुषार्थ में से एक धर्म का प्रतीक है ।

शंख बजाने का एक कारण ये भी है कि शंख की ध्वनि से जो आवाज़ निकलती है । वो नकारात्मक उर्जा का हनन कर देती है । आस पास का छोटा मोटा शोर जो भक्तो के मन और मस्तिष्क को भटका रहा होता है वो शंख की ध्वनि से दब जाता है और फिर निर्मल मन प्रभु के ध्यान में लग जाता है ।

प्राचीन भारत गाँव में रहता था जहाँ मुख्यत एक बड़ा मन्दिर होता था । आरती के समय शंख की ध्वनि पुरे गाँव में सुनाई दी  जाती थी और लोगो को ये संदेश मिल जाता था कि कुछ समय के लिए अपना काम छोड़ कर प्रभु का ध्यान कर ले ।
